If you’re a jazz lover looking for a “best kept
secret” in New Orleans, try Satchmo Summerfest in August. This fun
festival honours the city’s native son, Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong and
takes place across the French Quarter. The festival includes, lively
discussions and presentations, jazz exhibits, a jazz mass, activities
for budding young jazz fans, a club crawl, "red beans and ricely yours"
foods, and a star-studded line-up of performers that would have made
Louis smile.
Come and experience the real Big Easy: hot, lazy days with music in the
air, fabulous cuisine reflecting the city’s eclectic history, all
combined with wonderful southern hospitality. Optional excursions will
be available so that you can explore the city and its surrounding area
and there is the possibility of making this a two-centre holiday.
Day 1
Check-in at your departure airport in time
for your indirect flight to New Orleans.
On arrival you will transfer to the newly refurbished 4 D Hotel Bourbon
Orleans in the heart of the French Quarter where you will stay for the
next 8 nights on a bed and American Breakfast basis. Situated directly
behind the famous St. Louis Cathedral, the hotel offers direct access to
Royal Street, the fortune tellers and street performers of Jackson
Square, cafe au lait and beignets at Cafe du Monde, and the decadence of
Bourbon Street. The Hotel is within easy walk of jazz clubs and has its
own live jazz bar. Day2
Time to familiarise yourself with the French
Quarter with a guided ranger walk, courtesy of the National Parks
Service. In the afternoon why not take the free ferry “over da river” to
Old Algiers and enjoy a walk along the levee and the Jazz Walk of Fame. Each
of the lampposts is dedicated to a famous jazz musician and features an
audio overview of their life and music. In the evening, why not listen
to a set at Preservation Hall, or enjoy a visit to one of the jazz clubs
in the quarter. Day 3
If you would like to get out of the city,
why not take a swamp tour or plantation visit. These are easily
organised by the concierge at the Hotel. This could be the day to take
the Mississippi Jazz Cruise (included).
Day 4
Let the festival commence! There is a full
programme of events including talks, presentations and concerts at the
Old US Mint that is now a jazz museum.
Musicians, historians and jazz alumni will, provide a range of lectures
and seminars and presentations about the birth,
history and development of jazz and Louis himself in New Orleans.
Day 5
The festival continues
